The de Tomaso Pantera is an Italian sports car manufacturer Tomaso production from 1971 to 1991. It is a mid-engine two-seater with rear-wheel drive.
In 1969 the Ford Motor Company was looking for an Italian sports car manufacturer to buy. Ferrari Enzo years earlier had declined the offer, but with de Tomaso was no agreement. De Tomaso American investors showed a new prototype, the Panther, which fit into the plans of the mark in Detroit. Ford acquired a major shareholding Italian brand, it would supply engines to it and be responsible for distribution in the U.S. the new model. With this move is to be an athletic reasonable cost ($ 10,000) can compete with the Chevrolet Corvette rival General Motors.
Design line of Panther is the work of American stylist Tom Tjaarda of Dutch employee of Carrozzeria Ghia, while mechanics took Gian Paolo Dallara. The result was a sporty aggressive look to the Italian style, just what is demanded across the Atlantic. Everything was ready to storm the market Americas through the distribution network of the group Lincoln-Mercury Ford. About 6,000 Panthers were the United States between 1971 and 1974, a figure quite respectable for a car of this kind. In 1974 sales were down (the crisis of 73) and broke the distribution agreement with Ford, so that De Tomaso resumed control of his company and continued its production until 1991, albeit at a much lower production about 50 units annually.
Motor
The heart of the Panther is the Ford engine known as "Cleveland" of 351 cubic inches (about 5.8 liters), the same as fitted to the Ford Mustang, V8 engine more American style providing between 285 and 330 horsepower versions. In later years, even went to the 500 horses in the Pantera GT4. Power is transmitted through a gearbox transaxle inherited from the Ford GT40.
Chassis The chassis is a steel monocoque, being the first DeTomaso Pantera on using this technique. The rest of the mechanics was at the expected level, with independent suspension resulting from the competition front and rear, limited slip differential, ventilated discs powerful or magnesium Campagnolo wheels. An advanced mechanical in that the first units produced are expressed abundant failures quality image that weighed Pantera. Famous is the story of Elvis Presley and Pantera, who fired twice frustrated because the Italian sports car refused to start.
course soon there who used the Pantera in competition, but never achieved great victories was a more than worthy. Among his best performances can be highlighted the third place finish in the 6 hours of Vallelunga 1977 and obtained ninth place in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979.
rating
Pantera Total production was about 7,200 units, a considerable figure for a car so exotic. This makes your contribution is not too high: in the USA can be found from the Panthers to $ 50,000 which, compared with other classics listed, it is almost a gift. Factsheet
